Johannes Stein – A Biography
By Johannes Tautz
Walter
Johannes Stein was one of the pioneers of Anthroposophy - the
science of the spirit founded by Rudolf Steiner, which is
influential today in education, agriculture, medicine, science, and
art. To many Stein was a controversial and flamboyant figure. He was
certainly a fighter, seeing his task within the context of a
critical time in human development. In 1926, speaking at a general
meeting of the Anthroposophical Society, he said: ‘Perhaps it will
only be possible at the end of the century to bring to full harmony
the different impulses of will, which are opposed today. In spite of
this we must succeed in maintaining the continuity of our movement
until then . . . Only then will what Dr Steiner expresses in his
Mystery Drama become reality: "In much hate I can only see the seeds
of a future love."' Johannes Tautz catalogues Stein's fascinating
life with meticulous care. We see Stein as the school teacher,
lecturer and writer and follow his footsteps to Germany,
Switzerland, Britain, and throughout the world.
