The Spiritual Guidance of the Individual and Humanity is an
intermediate work, consisting of lectures which Rudolf Steiner personally
reworked for publication.
Steiner begins by
directing our attention to a second self, which is guiding us
through life. This self guides us especially in early life as we
raise ourselves to vertical balance in space, to an experience of
community through acquiring the faculty of speech, and to the power
of inner reflection with regard to ourselves and the world around
us. We exchange this inherent developmental faculty, which is still
connected to the spiritual hierarchies, for I-consciousness and
memory in the course of our early life. Who or what is the source
of this wisely directed growth in the young human being? Steiner
describes it in connection with the higher self of humanity Who
lived in Jesus during the years between the Baptism and the
Crucifixion. He points out that even if there were no Gospels to
tell us of the Christ, we would know it from an examination of our
own human nature. Looking within ourselves and at human history we
can understand the spiritual guidance of humanity and
of individual
human beings.

approach anthroposophy for the first time are suspicious and even
