The
Eye of the Needle
Bernard Lievegoed - his life and working encounter with
Anthroposophy
An
interview by Jelle van der Meulen
Bernard
Lievegoed died in December 1992, having led a creative life as a
psychiatrist, a pioneering doctor working with children with special
needs, and a management consultant who founded the N.P.I. Institute
for Organization Development. His books such as Phases, Man
on the Threshold, The Battle for the Soul, and Mystery
Streams in Europe and the New Mysteries reflect his wide ranging interests.
How did
Lievegoed combine such profound inner, spiritual research so
productively with his pioneering social, medical, educational and
management work? This question led Jelle van der Meulen to interview
Lievegoed. The Eye of the Needle is a fascinating biographical sketch that
presents a picture of the dynamics between inner and outer worlds -
and of Lievegoed's ability to integrate with this polarity.
Some of Lievegoed's
personal biography is also explored, such as Lievegoed's upbringing
in Indonesia, and the war years in Holland.
In the
last chapter, he looks to the human and spiritual challenges in the
coming years.
