The
Christian Mystery
Selected lectures by
Rudolf Steiner
Translated by James Hindes
Introduction by Christopher Bamford
"'Wake
and pray' — this is the fundamental Christian axiom, for the
new initiation occurs in the waking state. 'You shall know the
truth and the truth shall make you free.' This is a profound
Christian saying. It looks forward to the future of
Christianity — for Christianity actually stands only at the
beginning of its development." — Rudolf Steiner, Earlier
Initiation and Esoteric Christianity
The Christian Mystery is a
major new collection of lectures from 1906 and 1907 (many
previously unpublished in English), in which Rudolf Steiner
affirms the reality of esoteric Christianity and unveils many
of its secret teachings.
The range is vast. In the first sequence of
lectures, Steiner reveals the significance of the Mystery of
Golgotha and of the Blood that flowed on the Cross. The second
sequence deals with the relationship of Christ and Lucifer, or
Love and Knowledge. What Steiner speaks of is not theory but
experience, so there follows seven lectures on the different
paths of initiation: above all, on the Christian-Gnostic and
Rosicrucian paths. Prayer is integral to both of these
paths—especially, the Lord’s Prayer. All of Steiner’s lectures
on the Lord’s Prayer are included, as well as the version of the
Lord’s Prayer that Steiner himself prayed throughout his life.
The final section is on Steiner’s interpretations of the
Gospels.
The Christian
Mystery is an excellent volume for anyone
wishing to discover Rudolf Steiner’s approach to Christianity.
Those who are already aware of his approach will find their
appreciation deepened and expanded by this collection.
