From the Preface:
In Britain, biodynamic
practitioners have long had access to an excellent guide written by
George Corrin who served for many years as the Biodynamic
Agricultural Association consultant. His booklet “Handbook on
Composting and the Biodynamic Preparations” describes in detail how
to make compost and apply the compost and spray preparations. It
also covers slurry fermentation and the production of barrel
preparation. ‘Little need for another handbook’ one might say. Well,
although some of the same ground is covered, there is also much
which is quite new to English readers.
The principle author to this volume and
its companion “Biodynamic Spray and Compost Preparations –
Production Methods”, has devoted much of his life to biodynamic
agriculture. Christian von Wistinghausen has also spent many years
researching and collating the experiences and working practices that
have evolved in connection with the biodynamic preparations over the
years in many parts of Europe. Some of these practices have been
relatively unknown in the English speaking world. This is
particularly true of the different recipes described for making
compost starters and manure concentrates. While similar to one
another in many respects, each is also quite unique.
The differences in approach may at first
appear puzzling considering the universal nature of biodynamic work.
It does demonstrate however, that the application of these highly
active substances needs, like every other farming activity, to be
specifically tailored to the conditions pertaining on each farm
holding. The range of practices described shows how the
individualisation of each and every farm is both a goal and a
consequence of biodynamic agriculture.
